Re_Humanisation VIII. – Brina Kren and Eva Ostanek

concert

Re_Humanisation is a concert series that presents new musical, multimedia and stage works by young Slovenian artists. The series is based on a specific production process, where an ensemble of established musicians performs the works of younger authors, whereby the final artistic form is (co)shaped through joint work.

The artists in residence for the upcoming eighth edition, the second one this year, are Brina Kren and Eva Ostanek. The resident ensemble consists of Mauricio Valdés San Emeterio (electric guitar, electronics), Oskar Longyka (violin), Weronika Partyka (saxophone) and Urška Rihtaršič (harp), and is mentored by Dré A. Hočevar.

ABOUT THE PROGRAMME

Brina Kren: How People Live

How People Live is a concert series that I have been working on since 2020 and currently consists of 27 compositions. The series is a space in which, as a composer, I can ask myself fundamental questions about a composition, its potential, status and origin, and at the same time create my own entry point into the field. [Brina Kren]

Eva Ostanek: So It Goes

“So it goes” is Pilgrim Trout’s refrain in Slaughterhouse Five, Kurt Vonnegut’s most-quoted novel. It appears as many as 104 times throughout the entire book. The sci-fi framework of this anti-war novel allows the writer and the reader to distance themselves from the reality of the inevitability of the horrors of violence and its absurdity. [Eva Ostanek]

ABOUT THE AUTHORS

Brina Kren (Novo Mesto, 2003) is an instrumentalist and also active in the field of composition. She has played in various ensembles, including .abeceda [an ensemble for new music], Mango Quartet and Crucial Encounters, leading the latter and recording two albums of original music with it as part of the Young Researchers IV programme (2020, 2022). She is currently studying philosophy and musicology at the Faculty of Arts in Ljubljana. She is employed as a producer and editor of the ARHIV programme at the .abeceda Institute. She also writes poetry, having published two collections so far (2018, 2020).

Eva Ostanek (Ljubljana, 2000) is currently completing her undergraduate studies in composition and music theory under Prof. Dušan Bavdek at the Academy of Music in Ljubljana. She has trained with professors such as Miroslav Srnka, Moritz Eggert, Gyula Fekete, Ketty Nez, Nenad Firšt and Stephen McNeff at seminars and within the framework of the Erasmus project. She composes music for various ensembles, but she is most interested in the singing voice and musical theatre. She participates in independent musical projects, in productions of the Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television, in the Šentjakob Theatre as part of the Academy of Music mini-opera project, and the student Initiative for New Music, which collaborates with Ensemble Modern in Frankfurt.

Re_humanisation is a project by the .abeceda Institute and is supported by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Slovenia. The project takes place in cooperation with Kino Šiška.
