In July, the heat will be turned up by the wild Oh Sees, whose relentless exploration of rock music has established them as one of the most interesting and active bands of the millennium, a true institution of modern garage rock!
When speaking about garage rock in the 21stcentury, there’s one name you simply can’t skip. Well, to be exact, one name of numerous nomenclatural and lineup permutations. Oh Sees, Thee Oh Sees, The Ohsees, Orange County Sound and more, these are all the same band at various stages of existence and with varying membership, but always led by the hyperactive vocalist and guitarist John Dwyer– otherwise a close friend of another such contemporary rock stalwart,Ty Segall – and always tirelessly prolific.
Over the past 17 years, the band has released no fewer than 22 studio albums, as well as a bunch of EPs and special releases. Genre-wise, the releases deal in rock and its many derivatives, from the garage riffs and psychedelia of the 1960s to the punk, noise and post-punk of subsequent decades, but always with a fresh, energetic understanding of rock music that regularly places them onto annual best-of lists.
In its current incarnation, the band doesn’t hold back live either, hitting with a double drummer assault, keys, bass, and Dwyer’s arsenal, and that’s about all we dare say on the matter. Oh Sees, if that will still be their name during the time of the concert, are simply what any real rock band should be – bold, untamed and completely unpredictable. And that’s exactly why you shouldn’t miss out on them.
