Leo & Björn: Do I need to go there? (Revisited)

The Munich-based artist collective Leo & Björn (*1981) met each other while studying visual communications at the University of Applied Sciences in Munich and at the ZHDK (Zurich). They started to work together in 2007. Based on their fascination to discuss ideas with drawings, their mixed-media projects range from simple drawings, animations and software-based interactive images, to spatial installations and live-drawing performances. One of their central interests is the psychological and anthropological background of human behavior.

At Kino Šiška, Leo & Björn will continue an exploration they have started with their last installation in Munich, and by that diving deeper into the question, what the physical exhibition of artwork means. In Munich, they decided not to work with or showcase in a wooden wireframe-house, as the other artists of a group-show did. Instead, they built a virtual 3D-house and made an isometric drawing of it. A moving avatar was projected from behind onto the isometric drawing of the house-wireframe. The augmented drawing was accompanied by a big projection of the ego-perspective of the avatar, which walks through the real drawing of the house but also through the virtual architecture. Inside the virtual house the avatar sees an exhibition consisting of artworks by Leo & Björn, which were partly reproduced partly further developed for the virtual world. With the virtual artworks trying things, that would be hard or impossible in the real world (e.g. a vase consisting of moving drawings).

In Ljubljana, Leo & Björn want to further scrutinize the possibilities of this kind of spatiotemporal setup/installation, creating an experience impossible to achieve in a solely virtual representation of art. This time, not by refusing to work with a physical house and replacing it with a virtual one, but by means of working in a real building (Kino Šiška) and by adding additional (virtual) layers to it. By that, the want to enable an experience, that cannot be caught by a youtube-video-walkthrough.
