The Independents biennial emerged from the notions that the generally accepted concepts of illustration have been surpassed by modern creative practices long ago. The non-responsiveness of the expert public pushed an entire generation of young artists to the margins of artistic communication.

The Biennale of Independent Illustration set out in 2007 to redefine the long-established concepts of illustration with a fresh eye, and to create an open dialogue on the questions of the contemporary visual art and culture.

The Biennial expresses its marginal status and specifics through the horizontal selection of authors who implement a wide range of visual practices. What makes the Biennial unique is that authors from each Biennial then take on the role of curators for the following edition. The Biennial is a periodic event that investigates the fields and contexts of the use and application of modern illustration in the world today. It was created to support and foster direct authorship, and to promote the authors of such works.

In the eight years since its inception, we have witnessed a great development in the evolution of creative independent illustration. The experimental realizations of the range of work included in the Biennale have been a source of playful freedom of inter-media expression. The author’s projects are completely uncensored and follow the Independent Manifesto of the Biennial to encourage the greatest possible independence of work and creativity. The horizontal selection of new authors by the previous authors of each biennale, ensures each time, a new and fresh selection of artists that represent an in depth cross-section of the modern illustration sphere.

Above all, The Biennale of Independent Illustration is a tribute to the all authors who, despite the difficult conditions in cultural and visual practices, are driven forward always by the passion, curiosity, innovation and independent creative freedom that is the foundation to their creativity and life.

The events in Washington are a tribute to all the authors that have been a part of our journey and those that are yet to join.
